Aaron Schafer – Featured Alumni of April 2015
Aaron Schafer (’11) Attended Dixie State University (formally DSC) from 2007 to 2011 and received his Bachelors of Science degree in CIT / CS (Computer Information Technology – Emphasis in Computer Science)
In the second half of his last semester at DSC (fall 2011), he started working for Steton Technology Group located in Saint George, UT as a Software Engineer, writing reports for large companies such as Wendy’s, IHG, Marriott, EcoSure, McDonalds, Best Western, to name a few. He helped create software that would help these companies improve their quality of product/service. When looking for a job, he wanted to work for a company that produces software that makes the world a better place to live in, Steton does just that. Steton is now pushing from a small business to a corporation.
He graduated while working thirty hours a week and raising a family. Of course he couldn’t have done it without the help of his wonderful wife, McKenzey. While he studied hard, she held down the fort. They had two kids while he was attending school and now have four, the oldest is Emsley (6), next is James (4), Brinley (2), and Jacob (5 months old). They really love all of their kids and it’s well worth all the work to have them in their lives. His wife and he have learned together to not waste money on “wants” but to get by with only what they need, and spend smart. When he graduated, they had no debt except for a mortgage payment. A couple of years after he graduated, they were able to move out of their townhome and move into a normal size house with a front and back yard where their children can now play. They now rent out the townhome where they lived while attending college. In the home they now live in, they have been fixing it up, top to bottom, inside and out (a lot of work), “but hey, inch by inch life is a cinch.”
One of his favorite memories while attending Dixie State was the yearly barbecues during the Week of Welcome (WOW) and the yearly programming contests. He likes to program on the side and help where he can. He also loves to watch movies if he can squeeze it in his spare time. He also looks forward each year to attending Code Camp where many programmers of all levels go to compete, programming for twenty four hours straight… “Totally awesome! If you are a programmer that loves to program, then this is something you don’t want to miss.”
On a more serious note, there are many times he felt like giving up, dropping out of school, but he would receive renewed hope and strength to keep going, pushing himself to accomplish what he set out to do, graduate! His favorite quote says, “I am not judged by the number of times I fail, but by the number of times I succeed: and the number of times I succeed is in direct proportion to the number of times I fail and keep trying.” –Tom Hopkins
He loves life and will continue to strive to the best of his ability to succeed in his field of study and family life, making goals and pushing to achieve them. He hopes one day, that he’ll be able to… well, continue to make progress. “I like to ask myself, what do you want to achieve in the next day, month, year, years to come? I tell myself to go now and keep moving forward, we are all given opportunities to succeed. Don’t give up, keep on moving!”
